Dental care is vital to the overall health of any pet. Dental disease can lead to health issues with the heart, liver, and kidneys and has the potential to seep into your pet’s bloodstream. In fact, 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats over three years of age suffer from some form of dental disease, making it the most common pet health issue among our pet population.

Most pet owners do not realize their pets are having oral issues because they are very good at hiding issues. Many animals may drop food while eating, have odor from their breath, and possibly become more quiet and subdued.

Dentistry is performed under general anesthesia to allow us to thoroughly inspect every tooth. We assess the crowns (the visible part of the tooth) with probing and oral examination. We examine the roots with oral X-rays. Much like in people, dental x-rays allow us to see the overall health of the tooth root and assess the health of the bone surrounding the tooth. X-rays allow us to detect issues before they are visible such as: abscesses, tooth root fractures, and potentially cancer. If teeth need to be removed (extracted) our team is trained to perform oral surgery for most tooth extractions.
